Best known for his ability to inspire young students through passionate work on and off the podium, Nathan Fish comes from humble beginnings. As Music Director at Ida S. Baker High School, he honed his skills as a multifaceted music educator, teaching the Wind Ensemble, Concert Bands, String Orchestra, Jazz Band, Marching Band, and Mixed Choirs. During his time as Music Director he hosted many large-scale events at the school, giving him unique skills in planning, executing, and coordinating. In his second year of teaching he was offered the position of Conductor of the Southwest Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. During his tenure the ensemble grew in both numbers and quality; under his baton, the Youth Orchestra explored new and old music in the symphonic form while learning the unique balance of beauty and precision that only comes from playing in a full orchestra. Still an active educator, Nathan teaches privately here at the Traverse City Philharmonic Community Music School and throughout Northern Michigan. He also remains active as a performer in solo recitals, and coordinates and performs with his brass quintet, The TC 5, freelancing throughout Northern Michigan.
Nathan earned his Bachelor of Music Education with an instrumental concentration from Florida Gulf Coast University (2017). His primary instrument is the horn, and he studied with Kirsten Bendixen-Mahoney. He enjoys snowboarding, skateboarding, and spending time outdoors with his wife and daughter.
