Dr. Austin Oprean

Dr. Austin Oprean is a trombonist, educator, and arts administrator based in Traverse City, Michigan. He performs regularly with regional orchestras and ensembles throughout the Midwest and has appeared with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Sault Symphony Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Alluvion Big Band. Additional performance highlights include the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth World Tour at Shea's Performing Arts Center and appearances with the Broadway touring production of Chicago.

Dr. Oprean serves as Development Coordinator and Assistant Personnel Manager for the Traverse City Philharmonic and Community Music School, where he supports orchestra operations, musician coordination, and educational programming. As an educator, he has taught at the Interlochen Center for the Arts and previously served as Adjunct Instructor of Trombone at the University at Buffalo. He maintains an active private studio and works with students of all ages, emphasizing healthy technique, musical expression, and mindfulness-based approaches to performance.

He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Michigan State University, where his research focused on integrating mindfulness practices into collegiate music education. He also earned degrees from Penn State University and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Outside of music, he enjoys reading, rock climbing, and board games.
