Andrew Sprung


Andrew Sprung is Second Clarinetist of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra, Principal Clarinetist of the Jackson Symphony Orchestra, and Adjunct Instructor of Clarinet at Spring Arbor University and Hillsdale College. He has performed extensively in the Midwest with ensembles such as the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Lansing Symphony Orchestra, Grand Rapids Ballet, Michigan Philharmonic, Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, Central Iowa Symphony, Ames (Iowa) Chamber Artists, and others.

As a soloist, Sprung has performed concertos with the Livingston Symphony Orchestra; the Municipal Bands of Ames and Mason City, Iowa; the Bowling Green State University Wind Symphony; and the Iowa State University Symphony Orchestra as winner of its concerto competition. An avid chamber musician, Sprung is a founding member of the Hillsdale College Faculty Woodwind Quintet and has performed in chamber ensembles at the new music festivals of Bowling Green State University and Heidelberg College. His performing career has taken him to Carnegie Hall, Chicago’s Orchestra Hall, and venues throughout Europe.

Sprung maintains a busy schedule as an educator. In addition to his university positions, Sprung teaches private lessons, master classes, and sectionals to high school and middle school students throughout Michigan. Current and past teaching appointments include: Artist-in-Residence at Novi High School; Instrumental Music Instructor at Anthony Wayne Local Schools (Whitehouse, Ohio); Instructor of Clarinet and Saxophone Methods at Bowling Green State University; and sectional instructor/clinician at Traverse City Area Public Schools, Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, Holt Public Schools, and Huron Valley Schools.

An active scholar, Sprung’s articles have been published in The Clarinet, the official journal of the International Clarinet Association, and translated into Dutch for De Klarinet, a magazine based in The Netherlands.

Sprung holds a Master’s degree from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelor’s degree from Iowa State University. He is a Selmer Paris Artist, performing on Selmer Signature clarinets.
